This chapter focuses on security and safety practices to secure the electronic / electric architecture of ground vehicles. ISO 26262 on the functional safety of road vehicles is reviewed under this section. The most recent revision includes cybersecurity as part of the overall safety management and technical safety concept phase, an important consideration that was absent from previous iterations. This inclusion is a testament to the automotive industry’s understanding of the inherent link between functional safety and cybersecurity, which has been shown vulnerable by the security research industry in the last few years. This state of affairs has further led to the development of a cybersecurity-focused standard for the automotive industry (ISO/SAE CD 21434 covered in the section below).
